Abstract

The development of the teaching-learning process has always sought strategies to prevent school failure at any educational level, and in this way seek solutions to avoid a student setback. This research identified in first-level medical students the points that influenced their poor academic performance, according to a qualitative selfassessment carried out, and also revealed their commitments to improve this educational misfortune. A retrospective cross-sectional qualitative observational study was carried out applied to a sample of 116 students, selected with simple random sampling; through a self-assessment survey aimed at first-level students in the academic period October 2022 to March 2023.
It was determined that the weaknesses and threats that influence poor academic performance are; not having established study techniques, deficits in basic knowledge related to the secondary level, psychological problems, difficulty adapting to university studies, being far from your family (loneliness); It also established in the students the commitment to acquire good study habits, avoid distractions, and implement learning strategies.
