Abstract

Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the production
of autoantibodies against a wide range of autoantigens. In most patients, numerous tissues and organs are
involved, among which the kidneys, heart, brain, joints and skin. One of the most severe complications of the
disease is lupus nephritis, becoming an important cause of morbidity and mortality.

Objective: Describe the clinical case of a patient with Lupus Nephritis.

Material and methods: Retrospective descriptive study, clinical case presentation.

Results: This is a female patient, a 29-year-old female patient with a previous diagnosis of Systemic Lupus
Erythematosus, who came for presenting bilateral progressive lower limb edema, approximately one month in
evolution without apparent cause, predominantly morning that left fovea, in the last 48 hours was exacerbated
ascending reaching the palpebral region
This clinical case is classified as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus with a probability of high activity due to
renal involvement (Nephrotic Syndrome), with differential diagnoses of Congestive Heart Failure and
Hypertensive Crisis type Urgency.

During her stay in the Internal Medicine service of the Teaching Ambato General Hospital, she received
immunosuppressive treatment with corticosteroid therapy, and a renal biopsy was scheduled to define the
diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of lupus nephritis.

Conclusions: The presence of lupus nephropathy reveals a poor prognosis, clinical predictors such as serum

creatinine, proteinuria and immunological activity influence the long-term prognosis.
