Abstract

Introduction: Ventral hernia is a pathology that is characterized for the protrusion of intraabdominal content through a surrounding wall defect, being this primary or secondary, and developing multiple complications and even death if it is not treated opportunely. Its incidence has been growing worldwide every year, so this article has been focused in evaluate current knowledge about Ventral Hernia on surgery, to understand the anatomy, its diagnosis, and considerations for its surgical approach.

Methodology: A narrative bibliographic review of 32 scientific papers was made prioritizing the scientific evidence to unite knowledge about this illness and its actuality.

Conclusion: It is important to highlight that this study found that actual literature recommends the surgeon’s judgment on the choice of any surgical technique, finding a consensus that supports the use of mesh for reinforcement and reconstruction of the abdominal wall.
