Abstract

Introduction:The curricular design by competencies for medical training in Ecuador incorporates credits and propaedeutic cycles with reflections, conceptual aspects and methodological guidelines. The complex approach within the design by competencies gives a high priority to the formation of integral persons with ethical commitment, who seek their self -realization, in close connection with the society, suitable medical professionals and entrepreneurs. Kolb develops a teaching model applicable to each learning style and in this way guides the teacher, under a scheme of pedagogical comfort, according to the needs of the learner. The application to the teaching of the physiology will result in raising the quality of the formative process and the acquisition of the learning outcomes.

Objective:Applying the complex approach and the Kolb cycle in the teachingof medical physiology.

Methodology:An explanatory cross-sectional study was carried out to demonstrate the application of the complex approach and the Kolb cycle in the teaching of medical physiology to the students of the medical career of the Technical University of Ambato during the period Academic March-August 2018.Descriptive statistical methods were used.

Results:The complex processes of performance with suitability in the medicalformation integrate different knowledges (to know tobe, to know how to know and to know to coexist), to carryout activities and/or to solve problems with sense of challenge, motivation, flexibility, Creativity, understanding andentrepreneurship, within a perspective of metacognitive processing, continuous improvement and ethical commitment, with the goal of contributing to the professionaldevelopment, the construction and strengtheningof the linkage with the society, The continuous pursuitof academic and scientific development and the care andprotection of the environment. It showed an elevation of theacademic results in the subject, with impact on the cognitive, procedural and attitudinal aspects.

Conclusions:The application of the complex approach and the Kolb cycle to the teaching of physiology contributes to elevating the quality of the formative process and to achieving the learning outcomes with a view to acquiring the general and specific competencies declared in the Curricular design.
